As the number of my web sites grew, and as I began to add sites for others onto my reseller account, I decided that a web site was needed to “sell” web hosting accounts. Not that I was going into the business of hosting web sites, but I wanted something to point at when distinguishing between content and hosting, mostly for novice clients for whom I was making and hosting sites. I’ve always billed separately for design/development services, hosting, and domain names. That way, if any customer wants to take one or the other service into their own hands they can easily understand the various parts when making decisions. It has been helpful in some cases. If CamHost were a business it would be a bust, since I do so much pro bono hosting, but it was never meant to stand on its own.
The design for the site was just an exercise in using CSS to do a three-column layout. One of my goals for the site is to link to my customers, which gives them a little leg up in the rankings. Most of the sites I host link to CamHost and it links to them, all of which helps, even if only a little. I have tweaked it only twice, the last time to turn the right and left columns into iframes, which was all the rage in 2008. Obviously, it is in dire need of an update! Look for an HTML 5 version with a better CSS solution in the near future.
The name of the site is a dedication of sorts. C.A.M. are my son’s initials and HOSTing is what the site provides.
